BC-bred
victories may have been lacking in numbers this weekend with, unusually, only a
pair of locally bred winners at Hastings on each day.
However, in terms of quality there can again be no argument that the Province
is as capable of producing top-class performers as any other location.
Last
season’s Horse of the Year HERE’S HANNAH made a winning seasonal debut on
Saturday, showing a clean pair of heels to her rivals in the $50,000 Vancouver
Sun Stakes and demonstrating that she has returned from her winter sojourn as
well as ever.
What a flag bearer for her Canmor-based sire Numaany, HERE’S HANNAH is.
Saturday’s victory made it a barely credible eight wins from nine races (she
was third in the other) and she has garnered close to $250,000 in prize-money.
The considerable publicity Here’s Hannah is reflecting upon her sire will
hopefully lead to larger books of mares for the son of A.P. Indy. Numaany has
already recorded two winners from just five runners this season, to add to the
five winners from just ten runners in 2018 and it will be fascinating to see
how he progresses as the number of mares he covers increases.
A
tip of the hat this week must go to Helen Klimes who bred two winners,
including BROTHER ROD at Hastings for Here’s Hannah’s trainer, John Morrison.
Both winners were by the Klimes Farm stalwart, Storm Victory; another horse who
regularly out-performs the very low number of mares he now covers.
He may have been unraced, but Storm Victory was a very expensive yearling and,
being by Storm Cat out of a blue-blooded G2-winning daughter of Fappiano, he
has a pedigree the equal, or superior, to any sire currently standing in the
Province.
One of the most noteworthy victories this week came via the late-charging
effort by SUNBURST, who was winning following an eye-catching racetrack debut
two weeks earlier.
Bred and still owned by the Bennetts, the three-year-old Sunburst is a daughter
of their own stallion, Sungold. Like Numaany, Sungold is another son of A.P.
Indy, albeit one who has benefitted not only from larger books of mares than
the still relatively young Numaany, but also from access to stock raced, bred
and raised by one of our most committed and successful breeders.
SUNBURST won like a filly who might well go on to better things now that she
has got the hang of this racing lark.
Finally,
a shout out to Texas Wildcatter, whose excellent start to the season continued
at Hastings thanks to the exploits of his well-named son, IMPOSING CAT. The
five-year-old proved he was still as game as they come, making virtually all
the running to hold off a tough field of $16,000 claimers.
Bred by Glen Todd, who still owns the Canmor-based sire, Texas Wildcatter has
had three winners this season from 12 runners.
As always, do drop me a line if you know of any other BC-bred winners we may have overlooked.
Congratulations to all the connections!
