With some of the smaller meets and summer fairs now over for the year, it was gratifying to see that BC-bred horses still managed to clock up a dozen wins over the past week.

The consistency of BC-bred runners is something we should all be very proud of and a reminder (if we needed it) that, even set against a background of uncertainty over the past year or two, breeders in BC still know how to produce good-quality racing stock capable of winning, multi-season campaigns.

Questions of durability and toughness continue to be regularly discussed in the racing and breeding media – especially in regard to the commercially produced horses back east. However, one only needs to glance down the list of last week’s BC-bred winners to see that we continue to rear and run horses that thrive on their racing over multiple seasons.

The standout BC-bred from last week was, of course, COULTERBERRY (Finality), who landed the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic Stakes at Emerald Downs on Sunday for trainer Mark Cloutier, jockey Amadeo Perez and the six-year-old gelding’s owner/breeders, Roy and Dixie Jacobson.

Coulterberry has now won four races and finished runner-up twice from his six starts this term, to take his career total to 10 wins, five seconds and three thirds from 24 starts. Such consistency and durability is exactly what BC breeders are trying to achieve and he is a terrific reflection on all his connections.

Honorable mentions from this week’s supporting cast include the likes of THE ODDS R GOOD (Cause To Believe), who, like Coulterberry, has also won ten times (from 41 starts over six seasons) and ADITYA (Mass Market), another who landed his tenth win last weekend in a six-year career.

Both horses, as well as all the other BC-bred winners this week, are a great credit to their respective breeders and perfect examples of the type of durable Thoroughbreds that breeders know they can produce here in BC - and which are desperately needed to ensure the horse population remains as buoyant as possible.

Congratulations to all the connections of BC-bred winners this past week.
